Dhanteras

Do you know what’s the reason behind the celebration of dhanteras? Health has been considered superior to wealth in Indian culture. This proverb prevails today: “The first happiness is a healthy body, the second happiness is in the house” (Pahla Sukh Nirogi Kaya, Duja Sukh Ghar Main Maya), that is why importance is given to Dhanteras first in Deepawali. Which fits perfectly with Indian culture.

According to the Katha mentioned in the Shashtra (scriptures), during the Samudra Manthan, on the day of Kartik Krishna Trayodashi, Bhagwan Dhanvantari appeared with the Amrut Kalash (pot of nectar) in his hands. Bhagwan Dhanvantari is believed to be an Avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu. Bhagwan Vishnu took the Avatar of Dhanvantari for the propagation and expansion of medical science in the world on the day of dhanteras. The Dhanteras festival is celebrated with the appearance of the Bhagwan.

The mythological and authentic story of Dhanteras

The legend related to Dhanteras is that on the day of Kartik Krishna Trayodashi, Shukracharya, the Guru of the Asuras, had his eye broken by Bhagwan Vishnu due to a disturbance in the work of the Devas.

According to the Katha of dhanteras, Bhagwan Vishnu incarnated (Avatar) as Vamana to free the devas from the fear of King Bali and came to King Bali’s place of sacrifice. Shukracharya also recognized Bhagwan Vishnu in the form of Vamana and urged King Bali to refuse anything Vamana asked. Vamana is the real Bhagwan Vishnu who came to take everything from you to help the Devas.

Bali did not listen to Shukracharya. Vamana pledged to donate three paces of land, as required by the Lord, by taking water from the Kamandal. To prevent Bali from donating, Shukracharya entered King Bali’s kamandal in a miniature form. This blocked the way for water to flow from Kamandal.

Vamana understood Lord Shukracharya’s trick. Lord Vamana held the Kusha in his hand in such a way that Shukracharya’s eye blew out. Shukracharya nervously exited the kamandal.

Following this, Bali pledged to donate three steps of land. So Bhagwan Vamana measured the whole earth with one foot and space with the other. With no room to take the third step, Bali laid her head at Bhagwan Vamana’s feet. He lost everything in the sacrifice.

In this way, the Devas were freed from the fear of sacrifice, and the wealth and wealth that Bali had taken from the gods obtained many times more wealth than the gods. Dhanteras festival is also celebrated on this occasion.
